What are electric fireplaces and stoves?

Electric fireplaces and stoves are heating appliances that work by plugging into an ordinary power socket. They turn electrical energy into heat and, in most models, reproduce a realistic flame effect that recreates the atmosphere of a traditional fireplace. They are designed as supplementary electric heating for the living room, the study or the bedroom, when you want an immediate heat source in a single room.

Why choose the convenience of electric

The great advantage is simplicity. No flue is needed, no permits for smoke discharge are required, and you do not have to handle wood, pellets or ash. Just place the appliance, plug it into the power and switch it on. Many models are light and move easily from one room to another, while built-in or wall-mounted electric fireplaces become a furnishing element in their own right.

How much power you need, from W to kW

Power is measured in watts (W) and kilowatts (kW), where 1000 W equals 1 kW. To guide you:

  • up to 1 kW (about 1000 W): suitable for quickly warming a desk or a small area.
  • from 1 to 1.5 kW: ideal for bedrooms and rooms up to about 15 m².
  • 2 kW (2000 W): designed for living rooms and medium-sized rooms.

Almost all models let you choose between reduced and full power, so you can adjust consumption according to the cold and the room.

Flame effect and atmosphere

One of the main reasons to choose these products is the flame effect. Thanks to LED light play, many electric fireplaces simulate the dance of fire and embers very realistically, often with the option to light the flame even without heat. This way you enjoy the atmosphere of the fireplace all year round, turning the heating on only when you need it.

Thermostat and heat management

Most models include a thermostat that keeps the set temperature constant, switching the heating element on and off on its own to avoid waste. You will often find a programmable timer, several power modes and a remote control to operate everything from the sofa. These are features that make supplementary electric heating convenient and predictable in consumption.

The available brands and the alternatives

The catalogue features solutions by EasyComfort and Divina Fire, with prices starting from about 72 euros up to the most complete furnishing solutions. If you are looking for more structured heat for the whole home, you can consider the pellet stoves or the entire section dedicated to heating. For climate control all year round, heat-pump air conditioners remain an appealing choice.

Frequently asked questions

Do electric fireplaces really heat or are they only decorative?
They really heat. Most include a heating element with a power between about 1 and 2 kW, enough as supplementary heating in a single room. On many models you can also keep just the flame effect on without heat, when you want the atmosphere but do not need to warm up.
Do you need a flue to install an electric stove?
No. Electric stoves and fireplaces produce no smoke, so they need no flue or discharge. A power socket is enough, which makes them much simpler to install than wood or pellet models.
How much does an electric stove consume?
Consumption depends on the power set, expressed in watts or kilowatts. A 2 kW model draws about 2 kWh per hour at full power. Thanks to the thermostat and the reduced-power modes you can limit the draw, heating only when and where it is needed.
How does the thermostat work?
The thermostat measures the room temperature and keeps the value you have set, switching the heating element on and off automatically. This way you avoid overheating the room and keep consumption under control, without having to adjust anything by hand.
Can I move the electric fireplace from one room to another?
It depends on the model. Free-standing electric stoves and fireplaces are generally light and fitted with feet or wheels, so they move easily. Built-in or wall-mounted models, on the other hand, are designed to stay fixed and become a furnishing element.
Does the flame effect work even without heating?
Yes, on many models you can activate just the LED flame effect while keeping the heating element off. This way you enjoy the atmosphere of fire even on mild days, turning the heat on only when the temperature drops.
